The Idea
Every workplace has recurring administrative tasks that can easily be forgotten. At GFaI, I built Birthday Bot as a small internal automation to make birthday recognition more consistent and effortless for the team.
How It Works
Birthday Bot periodically checks the configured birthday information and automatically sends a personalized celebration message through the team's Slack workspace when appropriate.
Leveraging the Slack API
The bot integrated with Slack to deliver automated messages to the team. The project provided practical experience in connecting a small Python automation with an existing workplace communication platform.
Why Build Custom?
Building a lightweight internal solution allowed the workflow to be tailored to the team's needs without introducing unnecessary external dependencies.
Reflection
Birthday Bot is a small project, but it's one that had an immediate, visible impact on team culture. People noticed. It sparked conversations about what other small automations could make the workplace feel a little more human.
It also reinforced a principle I hold deeply: good automation doesn't just save time — it creates space for the things that matter. Nobody needed to remember to send a birthday message manually anymore. That cognitive load disappeared, and the result was actually more genuine celebration, not less.
